How to take Program Screenshots in Windows 10

In this article, I will show you how to take Screenshots in Windows 10 system. The tools used are ‘Snipping Tool‘ and ‘Snip and Sketch‘.

Snipping Tool on Windows

Step 1. Locating snipping tool on Windows

On Windows 10 PC, you will get search tab near Windows logo button, type snipping tool there and open it.

You will see interface of snipping tool like this.

Step 2. How to use snipping tool

In snipping tool, you will see five buttons. These are as described below.

  1. Mode – First you have to decide, which area of screen you are taking screenshot, whole screen of your desktop, or any open application window or selected area on your desktop. All the modes available are free form-form snip, rectangular snip, window snip, and full-screen snip.
  2. New – After selecting mode, click on New button to take the screenshot.
  3. Delay – Here you can set delay timer for the screenshot to be taken, this is needful when the open screen or window may get close on mouse click or key press.
  4. Cancel – To cancel the current screenshot taken.
  5. Options – To set different options for snipping tool.

After selecting required Mode, click on New button to take screenshot. You will notice that mouse pointer is changing for each mode selected as ✂, ➕, ?.

  • Free-form Snip – Mouse pointer will change to ✂ sign. You have to hold your left mouse button and drag the mouse on area to take screenshot.
  • Rectangular Snip – Mouse pointer will change to ➕ sign. Now you have to hold your left mouse button and drag the mouse on area to take screenshot. It will only select rectangular shape.
  • Window Snip – Mouse pointer will change to ? sign. Now to have to just select the open window to take screenshot of.
  • Full-screen Snip – After clicking on New button, whole desktop screenshot will be taken. Mouse pointer will not change now.

After taking screenshot, it need to be saved in an image in png, jpg or gif format to your folder.

Snipping tool is available for both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Windows 10 has also launched a new tool ‘Snip and Sketch‘, now let's see this tool too.

Step 1. Locating Snip and Sketch tool on Windows 10

Snip and Sketch is advance tool than Snipping Tool. It offers more options like cropping images. In addition to annotation tools like pen, pencil, highlighter and eraser for making screenshots more demanding.

The Snip and Sketch can be started by pressing Windows logo button + Shift + S keys simultaneously. Or by searching in search tab near windows button.

Step 2. How to use Snip and Sketch tool

When you click on New button or you press Windows logo button + Shift + S , you will get another interface to select from screenshot modes. Click on required mode and rest of process is same as of snipping tool.

After that screenshot will be displayed on Snip and Sketch interface. You can do annotations on the screenshot as you like and save it in any image format of your choice.
